Now is the time to think about your Snow Leopard install strategy

With two days (or less for some) until the official release of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, now is the time to start thinking about your strategy for the upgrade.  If you are like me and use the Mac mini as a dedicated Home Theater Mac / PC, then we won’t have too many worries.

I found this article at Lifehacker to contain some great tips for the upgrade and any data migration tasks you will need to perform.  This weekend I will be doing an upgrade over an existing Leopard installation as I only have Mac mini media center applications installed (other than Xcode and iPhone SDK).  Yet, I believe I will do the following two steps to make my upgrade as routine as possible and prepare for the worst:

  1. Use Onyx (as I use it regularly and it is free) to clean up extraneous log files, data remnants and basically perform overall optimization routines.  It ships with several scripts which may only require minor tweaking for your own setup.
  2. Although it happens automatically, I will run Time Machine and make doubly sure the full backup is sound and can be accessed if something were to go awry.  I contemplated performing a full clone of the drive but I have decided against it since I do not have much to lose if a major issue arises.

So how are you going to handle the Snow Leopard upgrade? Or are you thinking your $29 could be better spent at the local Cinemark with buttered popcorn and a box of Raisinets?
